Counselor's Corner
We start many Guidance classes with Counselor's Corner. I use the "Morning Meeting" concept for this activity. We pass or toss a stuffed animal to each other to first greet each other, and then to share a story or thoughts about a chosen topic.
The greeting portion of Counselor's Corner sets a positive tone, provides a sense of recognition and belonging, helps children learn names, and gives practice in offering hospitality. Sharing helps develop caring communication, extends the knowing and being known, encourages habits of inquiry and thought (important for cognitive growth), provides practice in speaking, and strengthens vocabulary development.
